Grout Calculator
Estimate how much grout a tile job needs from the area, tile size, and joint width.
Results are estimates for planning. Grout coverage varies by brand and mixing — always check the bag's coverage chart and buy a little extra.
How to Estimate Grout
Grout fills the joints between tiles, so the amount depends on tile size and how wide the joints are.
Tiled area
Enter the area being tiled in square feet, or the room length and width. Measure only the surfaces that actually get tiled.
Tile and joint size
Enter the tile length, width, and thickness, plus the grout joint width. Small tiles and wide joints use far more grout than large tiles with thin joints.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Ignoring tile size. Mosaic tiles can use several times the grout of large-format tiles over the same area.
- Wrong grout type. Use sanded grout for joints wider than 1/8 inch, unsanded for narrower ones.
- Mixing batches. Buy enough to finish from one batch — grout color can shift between bags.
- No spare. Keep a little grout for repairs; matching the color later is difficult.
Frequently Asked Questions
It depends on tile size, joint width, and tile thickness. Small tiles and wide joints need much more grout per sq ft.
Grout per sq ft rises with (tile length + width) ÷ (length × width), times joint width and tile thickness. The calculator does the math.
Yes — small mosaics have far more joint length per sq ft than large-format tiles, so they use much more grout.
Sanded for joints wider than ~1/8 inch, unsanded for narrower joints.
Yes — finish from one batch for consistent color and keep some for future repairs.
